Dr. Thomas studied medical genetics at Swansea University (UK) and the developmental origins of metabolic disease at the University of Southampton (UK). In 2015, he joined Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology, becoming senior editor in 2018, and joined The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology as Deputy Editor in 2020. In 2026, Hugh became Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet Digital Health. His interests include the development and deployment of foundation models in medicine, AI regulation, clinical research methods, and AI approaches in gastroenterology, hepatology, and oncology.
